You forced yourself to do something that you found unpleasant, taught yourself how to do it, and reminded yourself to do it a certain number of times a day. During this time, willpower could have ended the habit easily because it was willpower that was causing you to do it.

        The time soon arrived, however, when you didn’t need to force yourself or remind yourself to do it. At that point you had a habit, and habits are controlled by the unconscious mind. When you try to stop with willpower it often seems as though there is a part of you that is urging you to continue smoking. That is exactly what is happening That part is the unconscious part of you that runs your smoking habit. This is the part of you that willpower struggles to overcome. To succeed you need to resist the urges until you don’t need to resist them anymore – a drawn out and difficult process. A complication of this is that the process is stressful and most smokers smoke to deal with stress.

        In the event that willpower works, the person usually becomes an ex-smoker as opposed to a non smoker. An ex-smoker is someone who has ‘given something up’, becomes irritable and continues to have urges to smoke, because the program is still running in the background. Non smokers don’t need to resist smoking; it simply isn’t an issue anymore.

        Fortunately, there is an alternative, one that doesn’t require willpower, is easy and simple and doesn’t make you irritable for months. This alternative will turn you into a non smoker, not an ex smoker.
