If you try not to think about them (and how great they would taste if you ate some now) it makes things worse. Whatever you resist – persists. So the feeling of deprivation builds and builds, until you crack and eat loads of – whatever it is. Then you feel bad, guilty and disappointed after all that good deprivation you’ve put in. So what do you do to cheer yourself up – eat some more – aren’t diets great!

In order to be able to deprive yourself consistently, there is nothing like having an inspiring goal and what most dieters have is nothing like an inspiring goal. What they have instead is the second part of the ‘weight trap’.

 


Weekly weight loss goal
Why is this such a bad thing? For a goal to be useful, the thought of it should inspire you to achieve it. The thought of a needle pointing to a number that is 1, 2 or 3 pounds less than you are now, is at best not inspirational and at worst negative, as most people with weight issues have spent more time feeling bad ‘on scales’, than they have feeling good. Weighing yourself every week is like baking a cake and opening the oven door every two minutes to see if it is rising. It shows a lack of faith in the process, causes disappointment, and interferes with, or spoils the result you are trying to create.

Even if someone achieves temporary success with dieting it is eventually bound to fail, by definition of how it is approached. A diet is something you ‘go on’, which means that whether you succeed or fail – at some point you will ‘come off’ and revert back to eating what you did before, and go straight back to the same weight or even heavier.

You may now have a much clearer understanding of why you may have found weight-loss so difficult. When you eat what you want and savour every mouthful, your food is eaten more slowly, chewed more, and digested more effectively.
